Join Gary Shinfield in a conversation about his artmaking practice and exhibition development of Porous.
Porous traces how water passes through earth and stone, symbolising flux and absorption. Gary Shinfield’s concept underpins five years of work on paper inspired by the Central Coast of New South Wales, where waterways and rocky landscapes shape both the environment and creative memory. These artworks reflect responses to living amid these elements, interpreting their influence through abstract forms and colours that capture shifting tides and light. Ultimately, each piece maps a journey through internal and imagined landscapes shaped by nature’s presence.
Shinfield’s background and training are in design and printmaking, and for several decades has been making works on paper using traditional and experimental print methods, using relief printing and etching. He also works directly onto paper using drawing and painting techniques; his recent works combining both approaches. Since graduating in 2004 with a Masters in Fine Art/Printmaking (by research) from the College of Fine Art, UNSW, he has exhibited both nationally and internationally in solo and group exhibitions.
Shinfield’s work is represented in major collections - including Sydney Printmakers folios in the Art Gallery of NSW; Australian National University; and Australian National Gallery. Works have also been acquired by Regional Art Galleries in Australia, and international print collections. His work has recently been acquired by Maitland Regional Art Gallery NSW, 2020; and Broken Hill Regional Art Gallery NSW, 2019.
