Term 1, 2025 Evening Class- Planning Your Painting

Students with any level of experience in drawing or painting will discover the “tricks of the trade” that will help with confidence in their own artwork and a wider understanding of 2D art. Suitable for both abstract or representational artists. Learn how to develop a wider range of ideas for your work through composition and how a little bit of theory can take you a long way! Students can choose to work through weekly exercises or apply concepts directly to their own work. 

MATERIALS REQUIRED:
•    PAINT – Artist quality name brand (sets often do not contain these colours, but could be good to add to) 
Students may choose to work in acrylic or oils – or both
Titanium White
Warm Colours: Cadmium Red, Ultramarine Blue, Yellow Ochre or Cadmium Yellow 
Cool Colours: Phthalo Blue or Prussian Blue, Alizarin Crimson, Lemon Yellow 
Optional: Burnt Sienna or Burnt Umber or Raw Umber
•    Gloss or matte “flow” MEDIUM – any brand for acrylics
•    Linseed oil - for oils (odourless solvents should not be necessary)

SURFACE
•    One (1) Stretched square or rectangular canvas or canvas board (at least 30 cm on one side) – primed (with at least 2 coats of Gesso – better quality canvases are primed at least 3 times) 
•    Medium size - (eg. 30 x 30cm) square or rectangular 

BRUSHES – short, nylon (synthetic), not too soft
o    Range of widths – FLAT (3/4”, ½” or size 8, 12) – allows for wide strokes and lines 
o    Large brushes if working big
o    Palette knife and/or old credit card
o    Optional: Filbert, Round, large paint brush for backgrounds / large areas

EXTRAS
o    A4 Sketchbook – a place to keep notes, handouts, sketching
o    Palette – large white plate or white plastic plate, Perspex or glass (taped edge) or tear off pad (waxed sheets)
o    Water jar for cleaning brushes, 
o    Small container for linseed oil
o    Chroma Incredible brush cleaner
o    Rag or paper towel 
o    Apron,
o    Water spray
o    Cover to protect table
o    Personal image good quality reference A4 - Simple subject matter. (Teacher will utilise student reference to demonstrate possible approaches)
o    Hair dryer
o    Ruler, pencil/charcoal for sketches/planning composition (or watercolour pencil)
