Norman Haskell | Homage
This exhibition could be described like a bottle of (preferably red) wine: characters of Dada, Op, Pop, Surrealism and abstraction with contrasting notes of light and dark humour through a varietal blend of incongruous subject matter, random ideas, visual parody and hints of hypocrisy that may improve with age.
Dada was an early twentieth-century art movement. Dada artists embraced seemingly whimsical and/or spontaneous experiences through poetry, music and performance as well as visual arts. Works in this exhibition pay homage to and are a personal synthesis of three life passions - being a Grandparent, Dadaism and Photography - hence the name GranDada Photos; or GDP for short.
I manipulate my own photos of common sights and objects around us that many take for granted or ignore as uninteresting or ugly. For me, curb-side garbage heaps are unique collections of broken, old and unwanted excess that reflect people’s lives: our time and way of life. Decluttering houses and putting out garbage is one other side of consumerism and profit - relentless exploitation, destruction of the natural environment, waste and pollution - Gross Domestic Product with the emphasis on “Gross”.
